I heard yesterday on Fox News that there
is some concern with respect to the Rover mission to Mars. The idea is that the
Rover equipment had not previously been sterilized and contains some microbes
(bacteria, fungi, viruses, and microphage). Each of these organisms require
water for their sustenance and growth. If Mars actually contains water, then we
have contaminated that planet.
So what? Here we have another example of
environmental considerations out of control. If we bother to spend billions of
dollars in nationbuilding on this planet, is there something basically wrong in
carrying some of our natural resources (these microorganisms) to another
planet?
One of the bases for any kind of geographical exploration is the
possibility of a human development in a new location. If human beings eventually
want to go to Mars, how would they plan to sterilize themselves? A ridiculous
notion.
